VET in Schools (VETiS)

Some students undertake nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualifications while they are still at school. VET qualifications can be undertaken in Years 10, 11 and 12 and may provide credit towards the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). VET is learning which is directly related to work. Nationally recognised qualifications are developed by industry to give people the knowledge and skills they need to work in a particular job.

Students can undertake VET at school:

  • as part of their school studies - delivered and resourced by a school registered training organisation (RTO)

  • by enrolling in a qualification with an external RTO - funded either by the department's VET investment budget or through fee-for-service arrangements i.e. where the student or parent pays for the qualification
  • as a school-based apprentice or trainee. See User Choice and SATs

Costs of Training and Assessment for VETiS programs are reviewed annually. No fees are required for the current year for eligible participants.

Will other funding be available on completion of VETiS funded program?

VETiS qualifications on the Priority Skills List are only at the certificate I and II level. This is in recognition that the best pathway to employment for school students completing certificate III level qualifications is by participating in a SAT.

Students who complete a VETiS qualification at school, even at certificate III or higher, are still eligible to access further Queensland Government subsidised training post-school, such as free TAFE for under 25s and Certificate 3 Guarantee
