Finding common ground is always a great place to start. So what exactly do apprenticeships and traineeships have in common.

  1. Both are "earn while you learn" pathways
  2. Both offer real world practical experience
  3. Both offer Nationally Accredited Vocational qualifications
  4. Each are available full time, part time or even from school (school based)

So what's the difference? Simply answered it's time and type.

APPRENTICESHIPS

  • Take approx. 3-4 years to complete
  • Trades areas

Apprenticeships typically take four years to complete and traditionally cover skilled trade areas such as engineering and metal fabrication, automotive and mechanical, construction and building and electrical specialisations.

DID YOU KNOW?

The current Australian apprenticeship system was imported from the United Kingdowm at the time of European settlement in 1788 and date back to MEDIEVEL TIMES! Apprenticeships are one of the few employment institutions to have orginated from this age and are still recognisable today. Pretty great huh?

TRAINEESHIPS

  • Take approx. 1-2 years to complete
  • Broad occupational scope

Traineeships offer a broader range of occupational choices – anything from agriculture, to hospitality and business. The training component of a traineeship is usually shorter and can take between one to two years to complete.

SO WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Apprenticeships are the perfect for carving out a career in the trades. This pathway is practical, technical, on-the-job and debt free in most cases. Which are also the benefits of an apprenticeship over going to university, there's no HELP debt and an apprenticeship can lead to a huge range of career options and opportunities - even owning your own business.

Traineeships are an entrée to the world of work. They give you a “taste” of a variety of functions in a traditional workplace including customer service, finance support, administration, marketing and human resources. They are a great way to boost your credibility on your resume and some school leavers even think of a traineeship as a gap year – an opportunity to do flexible work, obtain a qualification and get paid before deciding what the future holds.
