An initiative of Downs Group Training, the Trade Ability Programme has visited schools across the Darling Downs & South Burnett areas since the inception of the programme in 2008, with the aim of creating an interest, enthusiasm and awareness of the fundamentals of “trade” primarily with secondary school students, but also in others who may not have previously considered a career as a tradesperson.  Through the trade medium of “blacksmithing” this interactive programme combines simple design and fabrication techniques in a real mobile workshop with an experience and qualified trainer.  The aim of the programme is to assist participants to identify their aptitude for trades and industry and to gain some understanding on what a trade in a range of industries has to offer as a career of first choice.   

The Trade Ability Programme can:

• Identify candidates who have a level of natural aptitude for trade and industry, which can then be used as a career selection tool by their school career advisers,
• Provide the participant with knowledge of their own trade aptitude which in turn gives them an increased level of confidence to pursue a career in the industry, and

• Provides participants with a broader knowledge of career pathways while creating links with industry.
