Too Skilled for School!

News Article from Thursday 11th January 2018

We're proud to say the first of our current group of Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) Trainees is completing his traineeship 3 months earlier than expected on Friday and going off to work for the Toowoomba Regional Council.

What a fantastic result for Lachlan Schilf, the DGT team and the Council!

Proving the SQW programs such as DGT's Toowoomba Construction Skills Program works by delivering on the promise of employability by doing this training.

Enrolled in our Certificate I in Construction CPC10111 with the Skilling Queenslanders for Work Program at Sunrise Way with John Steiner (Trainer) and Chris Morgan (Trades Assistant) Lachlan has worked very hard from early October to now in proving he is ready to be employed.

Lachlan finalises his training tomorrow being Friday the 12th of January and then starts up with the council on Monday! Talk about moving fast!

Lachlan has secured a role as a Civil Construction Trainee with the council, with some of his duties including formwork, concreting, bitumen resealing, planning, prep work and gaining his machinery tickets.

When asked what he is most looking forward to Lachlan said

"Learning new skills and utilising skills that I have learnt at DGT and putting them into practice."

So how about his time with DGT? Our team sat down with Lachlan to ask him a few questions about his time, check out some of his answers below...

What lesson do you value most from DGT?
Working as part of a team to get the job done

What project did you enjoy most?
The pallet project.

I enjoyed reusing old pallets and making something new and useful.

Would you recommend the SQW program to friends and why?
Yes, because it is a great way to learn new construction skills whilst getting yourself job ready.

What project/skills are you most proud of developing during this course?
I found the picnic tables to be the most rewarding project because it was bigger than first thought but our finished product was something to be proud of.

The skills I have developed are efficiency and good foundational knowledge of safety, tool use and doing a job right the first time.

What have you most improved upon during this course?
I have developed my confidence significantly through this course and learnt to speak up more and voice my opinions to contribute towards the team goals.

Why did you apply for the Cert 1 Construction?
Was working for a big manufacturing company as a machine operator but couldn’t see a future in it for me so I applied to get a start in the Construction industry which is my preferred path.

Why Civil?
Plenty of work in the industry and I’m keen to make my contribution towards building multi-million dollar projects.

What do you hope to achieve in the future?
To keep learning new skills whilst working my way up through the ranks in the civil construction industry.

What's your ultimate goal in life now?
My ultimate goal is to utilize my exceptional maths skills and foundational knowledge to become a great trade qualified electrician and perhaps one day run my own business.

Would you recommend DGT to friends and why?
Yes because the staff and trainers are great to work with.

Would you recommend our trainers to friends and why?
Yes, because they are highly skilled and are able to explain things in a way that makes it easy to understand.

Our team couldn't be prouder of Lachlan, he is a shining example of why we do what we do, to help those with a strong mindset, clear determination and great attitude get where they are meant to be going.
