Don't wait for anyone else to help you, help yourself and listen to yourself, the best person to make decisions about your life is most definitely you - welcome to adulting!

First, let's ask our Top 5 career defining, game changer questions...

What do you love doing in life or what excites you most?

List anything that you love about the world and the people in your life. Think about any activities that get you excited and enthusiastic and make you feel most alive. This can be absolutely anything: music, sports, cooking, teaching others, learning, watching movies—anything. Within your love for these things lies deep passion.

For one year you are free of all responsibilities and you can do anything you want? What do you do? Where? Why? With whom?

Removing limitations and allowing yourself to picture your ideal lifestyle will enable you to align your career with this ideal and eventually one day get there! List as much information about what your ideal lifestyle without limitations looks like - the more the better.

Then bring it back to where you are now and use your most powerful creation tool - decision making to always choose decisions that will result in moving you toward that lifestyle. Simply say no to anything that doesn't.

What would you do if you were a millionaire?

Ok so we would all probably book a round the world holiday, buy a few houses, set up our family for life but then what? When money is no object and there is no financial limitation what would you spend your time doing?

Would you spend your days tinkering in your 50 foot shed? Maybe you’d spend your days working on your vintage car collection and cruising around in the finished product? Perhaps you’d escape to your magnificent garden to tend to your plants all day long?

Apply these aspirations to reality and perhaps you are destined for a career as a Civil Engineer, Automotive Mechanic or Horticulturalist? All career paths DGT can assist with through our apprenticeship or traineeship learning programs.

Who do you admire the most or who is your hero?

Matthew McConaughey famous Hollywood actor famously said that his hero was “me in 10 years time” this is a great way to think. However who will you be in 10 years time? It takes much self reflection and self knowledge to come to this way of thinking.

To begin who do you love watching on TV, film, sports, documentaries, then who do you like to read, listen to, etc.

Those whom we admire we do so as they have qualities that are also in ourselves. Write down the 5 most inspirational or admirable people to you in the world. Think about why, then try to relate their inspirational qualities to yourself and how you may be developing.

Then tie it back to a career that will foster these qualities - the career tests we have listed below can also help you match your values to your career choice.

If you could choose to make one thing better about the world what would it be? What change would you want to be a part of?

Your change only has to be significant to you, it could be as simple as making the community gardens better at bringing joy to those who visit. Maybe you'd change cars to run better by inventing some cool new way of servicing them?

This question helps you further specify what drives you in life and what problems you might like to be solving for your fellow humans.

Making time for yourself to put the answers to these questions down on paper or typing them up will most certainly help you define a clearer career path and may even change your life.

The more you can incorporate your loves, values and motivations into your career the happier your life will be.

Next step, test your theory. By now you will have answered some powerful questions about yourself and your values.

  2. If you do not ask the answer will always be no
